This 2-day (4 sessions) course provides an introduction to consumer protection law on the issues related to consumer. Consumer protection law is often regarded as a modern phenomenon derived from the universal eight consumer rights which are the right to basic needs, the right to safety, the right to be informed, the right to choose, the right to be heard, the right to redress, the right to consumer education and the right to healthy environment. However, its origin is much earlier laws such as the laws related sale of goods, dangerous drug, food safety and even the criminal law. Consumer issues touch every part of our lives as one consumes to exist and never stop from consuming.
Consumer protection law is global and very complex. The laws constantly evolved due to the changes of consumer environment, particularly in the digital age, consumer protection has become an emerging issue with the advancement of technologies. The vulnerability of consumer increase with the globalised market without boundaries. In order to safeguards purchasers of goods and services against defective products and deceptive, misleading, fraudulent, unfair business practices, understanding of consumer law is needed to protect consumer in the modern economy.
This course provides an overview of the global perspective of consumer protection law with the underlying theories and concepts of the law. Candidates will be explored the interesting issues related to consumer contracts, unfair contract terms and the raising issues of consumer protection in the digital age.
