THE AZMI KHALID CONSTITUTIONAL LAW ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION 2025


The Faculty of Law, Universiti Malaya proudly announces the Azmi Khalid Constitutional Law Essay Writing Competition 2025, a celebration of intellectual exploration and a tribute to the legacy of Associate Professor Dr Azmi Khalid.

Renowned as a dedicated constitutionalist and an inspiring advocate for human rights, Associate Professor Dr Azmi Khalid made lasting contributions to Malaysia’s legal landscape. His passion for justice, scholarship, and education left an indelible mark on students, colleagues, and the broader legal community. In honour of his extraordinary impact, this competition seeks to cultivate critical thinking and encourage law students to engage deeply with contemporary constitutional challenges.

Supported by the Alumni of the Faculty’s Class of 1982, this biennial competition invites students from law schools across Malaysia to present their best ideas, research, and arguments, contributing to meaningful discourse on constitutional law.


Topic: Maintaining the Rule of Law with Our Constitution in the 21st Century

Eligibility

The competition is open to all full-time students enrolled at any public or private university in Malaysia, regardless of citizenship. To be eligible, participants must provide proof of their student status by submitting the following personal particulars, duly attested by an institutional superior.

Prizes

Submissions will be evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges and the following prizes will be awarded:

1. First Place: RM5,000 and a Certificate 2. Second Place: RM3,000 and a Certificate 3. Third Place: RM1,000 and a Certificate

Submission Guidelines

1. The essay must be between 2,500 to 3,000 words, excluding the abstract, footnotes, and bibliography.
2. Submissions must include an abstract of 100–150 words.
3. Essays must be submitted in PDF format and written in English.
4. Formatting requirements:
a. Title: Times New Roman, size 14
b. Abstract and text: Times New Roman, size 12
c. Footnotes: Times New Roman, size 10
d. Spacing: 1.5 for text, single-spacing for footnotes
5. Proper citation using footnotes is required.

Disqualification

Submissions will be disqualified if:

1. The essay is found to contain plagiarized content.
2. The participant fails to adhere to the competition's rules regarding AI use.

Closing Date: 10th March 2025 (by 5:00 PM)
Announcement of Results: 28th April 2025

How to Submit

Participants must submit their essays along with the Prescribed Form and Declaration Form via email to theazmikhalidessay@365.um.edu.my by the closing date. Late submissions will not be entertained.
