Introducing the UM Law innovative 3+1+1 scheme for Bachelor of Laws students!
This scheme enables LLB students to spend ONE year abroad, after completing 3 years at UM Law, at our partner law schools whereby they will gain Master degree course credits at the partner university. These credits will subsequently be converted to a Master of Law degree upon the student’s completion of their year 4 back at UM Law.

Tsinghua University
Tsinghua University was established in 1911, originally under the name “Tsing Hua Imperial College”. The faculty greatly valued the interaction between Chinese and Western cultures, the sciences and humanities, the ancient and modern. The law school is the first to offer an LLM in Chinese Law taught in English. The discipline of law in Tsinghua University ranks with the best in the PRC.

University of Melbourne
Melbourne Law School is ranked 1st in Australia and in the top 10 in the world. The 2025 program brings an array of international experts as well as Australian practitioners from all sectors of the legal profession, to ensure a continuation of the mix of in-depth legal knowledge and its practical application. The Master of Laws offers graduate level legal studies, which are recognised internationally. Students can tailor the course to suit their professional aspirations and personal interests.

Eligibility
Year 3 students who have a minimum CGPA of 3.3, good disciplinary record and excellent extra-curricular profile. Applicants (or their sponsors) will also need to demonstrate good financial standing to pay the relevant fees and living expenses. There may also be International English Language Test requirements depending on the partner institution.
How to apply?
Upon the opening of the submission period, students are asked to send their transcripts and any supporting documents to the Deputy Dean for Student Affairs, copying the Dean (personal email address) and Assistant Registrar for Student Affairs (nurin@um.edu.my). The Faculty will make its nominations and these will be passed to the partner institution. You will be contacted by the partner institution as to their precise procedural requirements. The programmes are likely to commence in or around September.
Post- year abroad
After your year abroad, you should complete your placement which is required by UM Law. You should liaise early on with the Undergraduate Office about your placement/internship.
For students undertaking the Tsinghua option, please note that you will be required to return to Tsinghua after you have successfully completed the final year of UM LLB to finish the formal registration procedures. You will also be required to complete and submit a thesis thereafter.
For Kings and Melbourne, there may be an opportunity to complete your dissertation whilst you are back at UM Law for your final year. Please however check the latest requirements with the relevant course offices.
