MASTER OF LEGAL STUDIES

Delivery Method: Conventional  :  Attending class physically at the campus (starting at 6.00 pm until 9.00 pm, weekdays)

The Master of Legal Studies is a multidisciplinary programme offered by the Faculty of Law. Guest lecturers from outside the University will also be invited to teach from time to time. This programme fulfills the need to train professional and skilled personnel who are involved in the criminal justice system. It is suitable not only for practitioners in the Malaysian criminal justice system but also practitioners from overseas.

ENTRY REQUIREMENT

1. EITHER A Bachelor's degree with Honours with CGPA of 3.0 and above or its equivalent;

2. OR A Bachelor's degree with Honours with CGPA from 2.70 to 2.99 and one of the following criteria:

  • Relevant work experience (3 years);
  • Publication in a relevant field;
  • Applicant is a scholarship holder;
  • Applicant is a Universiti Malaya graduate;
  • Applicant is a civil servant.

3. OR Bachelor of Laws with CGPA from 2.50 to 2.69 and two of the following criteria:

  • Relevant work experience (3 years);
  • Publication in a relevant field;
  • Applicant is a scholarship holder;
  • Applicant is a Universiti Malaya graduate;
  • Applicant is a civil servant.

General Information: Registrations are open all year. However, selection of Research Intent will be made by the Postgraduate Office headed by the Deputy Dean of Postgraduate Studies (Deputy Dean).
 
Below is our application process for the Master of Legal Studies (MLS).

  1. Receipt of application of  MLS through Maya portal (to comply with all the requirements stated on our website).
  2. Selection of Research Intent by Postgrad.
  3. If the Research Intent meets the minimum requirements - format (see below, focused topic, well written with minimum grammatical and spelling mistake, and coherent), the Research Intent will be sent to the proposed supervisor(s) for their consideration. The potential supervisor(s) will be selected by the Postgraduate Office.
  4. If the proposed Supervisor(s) is agreeable to the student’s Research Intent, an offer letter will be issued to the student through our Maya portal.
  5. If the Deputy Dean or the proposed Supervisor(s) rejects the Research Intent, the decision will be conveyed to the student through our MAYA portal.

 
Enrolment for the MLS programme are as follows:

Sem 1 – October (current year)
Sem 2 – March (current year)

Any application needs to be submitted with a 1000-words Research Intent in the following format:

  1. Introduction
  2. Problem Statement
  3. Literature Review
  4. Research Objectives
  5. Research Questions
  6. Methodology
  7. Conclusion

*Please note that your application will be rejected if you do not comply to the above format.

You do not need to name any Supervisor in your application form. Please leave it blank. Supervisor(s) will be assigned to you if the respective Supervisor(s) is agreeable to supervise you. Please also be informed that the assignment of Supervisor(s) is subject to the Deputy Dean's (Postgraduate Studies) approval..

English Language for Non-Malaysians
TOEFL – score 600; OR
IELTS (Academic) – band 6.00

Bahasa Malaysia for Malaysians
Passed in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM)

Bahasa Malaysia for Non-Malaysians citizens
Required to attend at a satisfactory level and pass a course in Bahasa Malaysia conducted by the University before being conferred the Degree.

General Information:  Registrations are open all year. However, selection of proposals will be made by the Taskforce Research Candidate Selection that convenes four (4) times a year - March, June, September, and December. For example, if you apply for our MLS programme in July, the committee will only convene in September and the decision will be made thereafter.
 
Below is our application process for the Master of Legal Studies (MLS).

  1. Receipt of application of PhD or MLS through Maya portal (to comply with all the requirements stated on our website).
  2. Selection of Proposal by PhD and MLS Committee members.
  3. If accepted, the proposal will be sent to the proposed supervisor(s) for their consideration.
  4. If the Taskforce and Supervisor(s) are agreeable to the student’s proposal, an offer letter will be issued to the student through our Maya portal.
  5. If the Taskforce or the proposed Supervisor rejects the proposal, the decision will be conveyed to the student through our MAYA portal.

 
Enrolment for the MLS programme are as follows:
