UNIVERSITI Malaya’s recently appointed Faculty of Law dean Prof Dr Jason Chuah stressed that the country’s oldest and most prestigious Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree is committed to widening participation from all sections of Malaysian society. For years, entry was limited by govern- ment funding. Thus, even well-qualified students could not gain entry.
Now, UM is open to privately funded students – but subject to the same entry requirements.

Prof Chuah quipped, “You wouldn’t expect UM to lower academic standards. But we do want a richer, more diverse community of high-achieving students.”

UM Law is a highly recognised name, with its alumni occupying top positions in public service and the legal profession.
The UM LLB degree is distinctive, as UM Law students gain direct entry into the legal profession, without needing to complete additional tests like the Certificate of Legal Practice or the English Bar.Unlike foreign law degrees, UM Law students are immersed in Malaysian law from the start.
They are taught by experts from both legal practice and academia, giving the programme a strong intellectual and practical foundation.
